Marygold kommen zwar aus Verona, klingen aber so gar nicht nach typischem Italo Prog. Entstanden ist die Formation Mitte der 90er-Jahre. Zu Beginn wurden vor allem Marillion- und Genesis-Songs gecovert, bevor dann vor elf Jahren das Debüt The Guns Of Marygold entstand. One Light Year ist erst die zweite Scheibe der Italiener. Stilistisch orientieren sie sich weiterhin am britischen Neoprog und bieten so ziemlich alles, was Fans des Genres so sehr mögen: eine melodische Grundausrichtung und epische Instrumentalpassagen, die von wunderbar miteinander harmonierenden Gitarren- und Keyboardsoli leben. Dazu kommt mit Guido Cavalleri ein vielleicht etwas gewöhnungsbedürftiger, aber auch sehr ausdrucksstarker und prägnanter Sänger, der den Songs Tiefe verleiht. Die Produktion ist stimmig, die Songs bewegen sich mit fünf bis zwölfeinhalb Minuten innerhalb der genretypischen Spielzeit.
Wer allerdings hochkomplexen, verschachtelten Prog Rock mit modernen Einflüssen sucht, ist hier so ziemlich komplett an der falschen Adresse. Anhänger von Pendragon, Marillion, IQ und Genesis werden jedoch ihre Freude an One Light Year haben. Marygold gewinnen dabei mit ihrem zweiten Werk vielleicht keinen Innovationspreis, aber es ist ihnen ein regelrechtes „Wohlfühlalbum“ für alle Neoprog-Fans gelungen.
Marygold may come from Verona, but they don’t sound like typical Italo Prog, the formation emerged in the mid-1990s. At the beginning, mainly Marillion and Genesis songs were covered before the debut The Guns Of Marygold was released eleven years ago. One Light Year is only the second album of the Italians. Stylistically, they continue to focus on the British neoprog and offer just about everything fans of the genre love: a melodic orientation and epic instrumental passages that live on wonderfully harmonious guitar and keyboard solos. In addition, Guido Cavalleri is a somewhat unfamiliar, but also very expressive and concise singer, who adds depth to the songs. The production is harmonious, the songs move with five to twelve and a half minutes within the typical playing time of the genre.
But if you are looking for highly complex, nested Prog Rock with modern influences, you’re in the wrong place. However, supporters of Pendragon, Marillion, IQ and Genesis will enjoy One Light Year. Marygold may not win an innovation prize with their second work, but they have succeeded in creating a real “feel-good” album for all Neoprog fans.
