A new review on Dutch Rockmuzine.nl

Many thanks to Esther Tiger Kessel-Tamerus for her great review on the Dutch Rockmuzine pages!

Regarding our album ‘One Light Year’, she wrote: “It’s a great album. In short, the structure is complex, but Marygold has managed to pack this in an accessible way.”

‘One light year’ is een prima album.

Marygold was founded in Verona (Italy) in the 1990s. First as a cover tyre of mainly Marillion. Gradually they started writing their own songs. There followed a number of changes in occupation and there was a period of silence. But Marygold never lost the love for making prog rock. A few weeks ago their new album’ One light year’ fell on the mat.

Ants in the sand’ has an instrumental intro in which rhythm and melody go hand in hand. Singer Guido Cavalleri has his own voice, and he sings clearly. The backing vocals are beautifully integrated. The changes in music are usually gradual. The high vocals of guest singer Irene Tamassia is surprising, but forms an excellent match. The end is played quite tightly.

The instrumental intro of’ 15 Years’ is calmly constructed. This fits in with the light melancholic atmosphere that this track exudes. The multiple layers on top of each other are nicely distributed over the headphones and are well interspersed. Not only these, but all tracks have a rather complex structure.
Time and again you hear new things and surprising elements like the acoustic guitar playing in’ Spherax H2O’. This is a lovely long epic track.

Without stalagmite’ starts with the sound of timpani. This starts very soft and swells. I miss some body in sound quality. This makes it less impressive. The volume of the timpani is balanced with the strings and keys. Acoustic guitar melts together with the flute. The layers are in harmony. There are several twists and turns. One more gradual than the other. Despite all these twists and turns, it is not bombastic. Also in’ Lord of time’ there are tempo and volume changes. The interaction between keys and strings is particularly evident because they are played with the distribution between the boxes. The small part played is really good. The tightly played movement idem ditto ditto. The light screaming guitar playing and the organ playing are super. This provides some rock where the drums and bass also get space. Again, the distribution over the headphones is very good. Different transitions are impressive. Guido’s voice fits perfectly with a new minimalist piece. The nice long instrumental piece is pure enjoyment. Reasonably unexpectedly, this beautiful epic is turned away. Pity, because suddenly it’s quiet and the album is over. Getting it to die away very slowly would have been an alternative.

The sound quality is certainly not bad. But this album deserves a sublime quality. Because the tracks are quite complicated. There are plenty of twists and turns, which usually run smoothly. Moreover, all kinds of details are interwoven. In short, the structure is complex, but Marygold has managed to pack this in an accessible way. One light year’ is a great album.
