Band veronese al secondo disco in studio, ma con tanti anni di carriera/gavetta sul groppone, con ‘One Light Year’ i Marygold confezionano un disco di buon livello, pregno di rimandi a Genesis e Marillion (e con qualche breve “omaggio” ai Pink Floyd che si intravede tra gli intermezzi di tastiera), in cui risulta evidente quanto sia maturata la vena compositiva del gruppo, oggi decisamente più dinamica e decisa, dove soprattutto le linee melodiche trovano il giusto incastro all’interno dei brani. Emerge anche una certa personalità tra i componenti del quintetto, segnale importante quando sul piano dell’ispirazione si traggono spunti da mostri sacri come quelli citati in precedenza. Per quanto concerne all’approccio stilistico, i Marygold mostrano di non amare molto gli intrecci strumentali, e si affidano ad una eleganza di fondo che fa da sponda ad un flusso compositivo dall’incedere continuo. Probabilmente, rappresenta anche il limite della band dato che il disco, per quanto ben strutturato, non punta mai oltre il dovuto in fatto di idee, stagnando sempre in territori più che sicuri dal primo all’ultimo secondo. Ulteriore appunto è rappresentato dalla voce di Guido Cavalieri: sicuramente personale con il suo spiccato grado di “nasalità”, ma non molto incisivo quando i brani richiedono sfumature particolari e cambi di registro. Ad ogni modo, siamo convinti che la maturazione del quintetto non sia affatto compiuta, e che la strada intrapresa per migliorare ulteriormente sia quella giusta (anche perchè le potenzialità per farlo ci sono tutte). Intanto, ‘One light Year’ rappresenta un ottimo ritorno per una band che ha ancora qualcosa da dire.

As far as the stylistic approach is concerned, the Marygold models show that they don’t love the instrumental weaving very much, and they rely on an elegance of background that is the backdrop to a compositional flow of continuous progress. Probably, it also represents the band’s limit since the record, although well-structured, never goes beyond what is necessary in terms of ideas, always stagnating in territories more than safe from the first to the last second. Guido Cavalieri’s voice is also represented by Guido Cavalieri’s voice: certainly personal with his remarkable degree of “nasality”, but not very incisive when the tracks require particular nuances and changes of register. In any case, we are convinced that the maturity of the quintet has not been completed at all, and that the path taken to further improve is the right one (also because the potential to do so is all there). Meanwhile,’ One light Year’ is a great return for a band that still has something to say.
