MARYGOLD s’est formé à Vérone à l’automne de 1994, issu du groupe Wildfire, ce dernier reprenait surtout des pièces de Marillion, période Fish. Sous leur nouveau nom, le groupe a commencé à travailler leurs propres compositions, ce qui les a conduits pour aboutir à la sortie de leur premier CD en 2006 sous le titre « The Guns of Marygold ». Puis plus rien du côté musical, mais la vie, pour chacun, a suivi son chemin, c’est-à-dire la famille et le travail principalement, il faut bien manger. Il y a eu aussi du mouvement du côté du groupe, tout cela à retarder l’atteinte de leurs objectifs. Mais voici que MARYGOLD revient sur la scène musicale en nous présentant son nouvel album « One Light Year ». Si le noyau dur est toujours présent, un léger changement au line-up est observable, Alberto Molesini (basse), Massimo BASAGLIA (guitare), Stefano BIGARELLI (claviers), Marco PASCUETTO (batterie / percussions) et Guido CAVARELLI (chant). On peut aussi noter la présence de deux invités Irene TAMASSIA (chant) sur un titre et Fabio SERRA (chœur). Est-ce que le groupe a évolué, je crois que oui et une caractéristique de cette évolution est qu’ils ont conservé leur identité. Mais ce n’est pas seulement cela, MARYGOLD a élargi et enrichi son approche musicale. Donc onze ans après « The Guns of Marygold », voici « One Light Year » qui, je crois, valait l’attente.
Ces gars n’ont aucun problème, ils combinent les passages plus calmes et subtils avec une certaine sophistication instrumentale, à des soudaines rafales plus tranchantes. Bien sûr, je peux aller plus loin dans l’ensemble des aspects de ce nouvel album. « One Light Year » débute avec « Ants in the Sand » une pièce Mid-tempo, où nous pouvons reconnaitre les influences de Marillion. Dans la seconde moitié de la composition, on note l’apport de la très belle voix d’Irene TAMASSIA, puis le rythme s’accélère, le chant de CAVALLERI devient plus insistant jusqu’à une finale instrumentale très rock, trop courte peut-être. On poursuit avec, « 15 Years » qui est proche de la précédente de par son tempo. On peut entendre ici quelques échos à la Marillion, toutefois nous découvrons peu à peu le nouveau MARYGOLD. « Spherax H2O » nous entraine doucement mais sûrement dans quelque chose de plus sérieux. C’est douze minutes de grand bonheur. Guido CAVALLERI offre une performance vocale exceptionnelle, l’auditeur ressent toute l’émotion qui jaillie de son interprétation. Stefano BIGARELLI nous montre toutes ses qualités sur ses claviers, il réussit par son jeu délicat à créer une atmosphère inquiétante bien sentie. Il ne faut pas oublier les prestations de Massimo BASAGLIA à la guitare, et d’Alberto MOLESINI et Marco PASCUETTO, c’est dernier offrant une section rythmique très à point. Le quatrième titre « Travel Notes on Bretagne » continue ce saisissant parcours musical avec quelques influences de quelques groupes connus, ici je m’abstiens d’en nommer, je vous laisse plutôt le privilège de comparer. « Without Stalagmite » est une pièce instrumentale fascinante, l’introduction nous installe dans un environnement mystérieux avec les nappes de claviers accompagnés par les battements répétitifs des tambours avec en plus, une guitare qui augmente l’intrigue. Je n’ai pas parlé de la flute qui est présente sur ce titre, mais de façon timide. Elle est suivie de « Pain », un autre qui rappelle les premiers Marillion. Si cela ne suffisait pas, le second long titre, « Lord of Time » sonne comme un pinacle pour le groupe. Il se distingue comme le plus vif de tout l’album, étant imprégné d’étincelles vintage intrigantes, les multiples textures, des claviers ingénieux, et des improvisations de guitare impeccables. Tout cela dans un décor de rythmes astucieux et accrocheurs, et un chant sans reproche.
De manière générale, l’interaction étroite de tous les instruments et le travail vocal fournit sur l’ensemble de « One Light Year » comble de satisfaction votre humble serviteur. Pour résumer : MARYGOLD revient en force avec un album solide qui est clairement digne de louange ! Vraiment excellent! Recommandé chaudement!
MARYGOLD was formed in Verona in the autumn of 1994, coming from the Wildfire group, the latter was mainly based on pieces by Marillion, during the Fish period. Under their new name, the band started working on their own compositions, which led them to release their first CD in 2006 under the title “The Guns of Marygold”. Then nothing more on the musical side, but life, for everyone, has followed its path, that is to say the family and work mainly, you have to eat well. If the hard core is still present, a slight change in the line-up can be observed, Alberto Molesini (bass), Massimo BASAGLIA (guitar), Stefano BIGARELLI (keyboards), Marco PASCUETTO (drums / percussion) and Guido CAVARELLI (vocals). We can also note the presence of two guests Irene TAMASSIA (singing) on a title and Fabio SERRA (chorus). Has the group evolved, I think so, and a characteristic of this evolution is that they have retained their identity. But not only that, MARYGOLD has broadened and enriched its musical approach. So eleven years after “The Guns of Marygold”, here is “One Light Year” which I think was worth the wait.
These guys don’t have any problem, they combine the calmer and more subtle passages with a certain instrumental sophistication, with sudden sharp gusts of wind. Of course, I can go further in all aspects of this new album.
” One Light Year “begins with” Ants in the Sand “a Mid-tempo piece, where we can recognize Marillion’s influences. In the second half of the composition, we note the contribution of Irene TAMASSIA’s beautiful voice, then the rhythm accelerates, the song of CAVALLERI becomes more insistent until a very rock instrumental finale, too short perhaps.
We continue with,”15 Years” which is close to the previous one by its tempo. We can hear some echoes here at the Marillion, but we are gradually discovering the new MARYGOLD.”
Spherax H2O “takes us slowly but surely into something more serious. It’s 12 minutes of great happiness. Guido CAVALLERI offers an exceptional vocal performance, the listener feels all the emotion that springs from his interpretation. Stefano BIGARELLI shows us all his qualities on his keyboards, he succeeds by his delicate playing to create a disturbing atmosphere well felt. Don’t forget the performances of Massimo BASAGLIA on guitar, and Alberto MOLESINI and Marco PASCUETTO, it’s the last one with a very good rhythm section.
The fourth track “Travel Notes on Bretagne” continues this striking musical journey with some influences from a few well-known bands, here I will refrain from mentioning some of them, I leave you the privilege of comparing.
Without Stalagmite “is a fascinating instrumental piece, the introduction installs us in a mysterious environment with keyboards accompanied by the repetitive beats of drums and a guitar that increases the intrigue. I didn’t talk about the flute on that track, but in a timid way. It is followed by “Pain”, another one reminiscent of the first Marillions.
If that wasn’t enough, the second long track,”Lord of Time” sounds like a pinnacle for the band. He distinguishes himself as the brightest of the whole album, being imbued with intriguing vintage sparks, multiple textures, ingenious keyboards, and impeccable guitar improvisations. All this in a decor of clever and catchy rhythms, and a song without reproach.
Generally speaking, the close interaction of all instruments and vocal work provides on the whole of “One Light Year” fills your humble servant with satisfaction. To sum up: MARYGOLD comes back in force with a solid album that is clearly worthy of praise! Really excellent! Hotly recommended!
