Era da tanto che non sentivamo parlare dei Marygold, fermi da tempo prima di tornare sulle scene. Da qualche mese sono tornati con un nuovo lavoro dal titolo One Light Year, un lavoro che pesca dalle loro radici, da quando si esibivano proponendo brani dei Marillion. È proprio a loro che si ispirano, senza ombra di dubbio, a quel progressive rock molto sofisticato, non a tutti i costi traverso, e strettamente british style a cui Fish & Co. ci hanno abituati. Sì perché del periodo Hogarth c’è davvero poco, quasi niente: i Marygold preferiscono puntare alle bordate di tastiere e piano, alle sonorità soft prog settantiane arricchite da quelle ambientazioni che chiunque abbia amato Yes e Genesis, prima ancora dei Marillion, riesce ad apprezzare ancora oggi.
In questo il brano Spherax H20 è in assoluto il re di questo lavoro, un pezzo come solo i grandi sanno scrivere che non teme il cambio di sfondi e la transumanza di emozioni, in una cornice allo stesso tempo moderna e storica. Un altro brano che ci riporta a quelle terre tanto care ai fishiani è Pain, con effetti tastieristici a metà brano che ricordano la PFM e un’eleganza degna di nota.
Un plauso va anche al singer Guido Cavalleri che ha un timbro molto particolare, difficile digerirlo al primo ascolto ma poi lo si assorbe con piacere e si riesce a percepire il calore delle sue tonalità, quasi come fosse un Mario Biondi prestato al prog. Da migliorare, a nostro parere, la fonetica inglese: per un lavoro di questo genere diventano importanti gli accenti e le vocali, la pronuncia e, perché no, le parole tipicamente inglesi, senza alcuna italianità di fondo (Fish docet).
Un ottimo lavoro di prog rock classico, di altissimo spessore musicale ed artistico. Assolutamente da avere per gli appassionati del genere.
It was so much that we didn’t hear about Marygold, who had been standing still for a long time before returning to the scenes. For some months they have been back with a new work entitled One Light Year, a work that has been fishing from their roots, since they were performing songs by the Marillion. It is to them that they are inspired, without a shadow of a doubt, by that very sophisticated progressive rock, not at all costs through, and strictly British style to which Fish & Co. have accustomed us. Yes, because of the Hogarth period there is very little, almost nothing at all: Marygold prefer to focus on the edges of keyboards and piano, to the soft prog sounds of the Sectantians enriched by those settings that anyone who loved Yes and Genesis, even before the Marillion, can still appreciate today.
In this the song Spherax H20 is by far the king of this work, a piece as only the greats know how to write that doesn’t fear the change of backgrounds and the transhumance of emotions, in a frame at the same time modern and historical. Another piece that brings us back to those lands so dear to the fishians is Pain, with keyboard effects halfway through the piece that recall the PFM and an elegance worthy of note.
The singer Guido Cavalleri is also applauded for having a very particular timbre, difficult to digest at first listening but then absorbed with pleasure and you can perceive the warmth of his tones, almost as if it were a Mario Biondi lent to the prog. English phonetics must be improved, in our opinion: for a work of this kind, accents and vocals, pronunciation and, why not, the typically English words, without any background Italianism, become important (Fish docet).
An excellent work of classical prog rock, of very high musical and artistic depth. Absolutely to have for fans of the genre.
