Marygold aus Verona haben 11 Jahre nach ihrem letzten Album The Guns Of Marygold ein Nachfolgewerk eingespielt. Das Debüt rezensierte ich damals 2006, bei der ersten Version von Proggies.ch. So viel ich noch weiss, hinterliess es bei mir nicht unbedingt viel Eindruck, aber die Cd war für ein Debüt ganz ok.
Marygold sind eine NeoProg Band, das zeigt sich bei den Keyboards wie auch der Gitarrenbeiträge. Die Besetzung ist bis auf den neuen Bassisten gleich geblieben. Das ist erstaunlich, denn gerade bei so langen Zeitabschnitten zwischen Alben ist es nicht aussergewöhnlich, dass sich eine Band neu formiert und definiert. Musikalische Vorbilder lassen sich in Namen wie Genesis, Marillion, IQ, Pendragon, Arena etc finden.
Die Band überzeugt vor allem im instrumentalen Sektor. Keyboarder Stefano Bigarelli hat einige illustre Sounds im Gepäck und harmoniert gekonnt mit dem Gitarristen Massimo Basaglia, der ebenfalls ein breites Spektrum an Klangfarben bereithält und sich an Rothery, Hackett oder sogar Barrett orientiert. Als alter NeoProg-Fuchs kann ich nach wie vor diesem Stil was abgewinnen.
Gewöhnungsbedürftiger sind allerdings die Vocals. Guido Cavalleri’s Stimme hat was ganz eigenes an sich. Ich hab ein paar Hördurchgänge gebraucht, bis ich mich damit angefreundet hatte. Aber schlussendlich muss ich mir selbst eingestehen, dass ich froh bin, dass hier nicht die x-te Variante eines Mad-Hatters agiert.
Fazit: Im Bereich des Songwritings und der Arrangements haben sich Marygold sichtlich weiterentwickelt. Mir gefallen die instrumentalen Beiträge sehr. Gerade ein Song wie Spherax H20 bietet so ziemlich alles, was der NeoProgger hören möchte. Ob man die Stimme mag oder nicht, ist Geschmackssache und muss wohl jeder mit sich selbst ausmachen. Ich hab unzählige Cd’s rezensiert und viel Schlechteres gehört. Und Cavalleri zeigt sich zumindest tonsicher. Also Daumen hoch.

Marygold from Verona recorded a follow-up work 11 years after their last album The Guns Of Marygold. I reviewed the debut in 2006, at the first version of Proggies.ch. As far as I know, it didn’t leave much impression on me, but the cd was quite ok for a debut.
Marygold are a NeoProg band, as you can see on the keyboards and guitar parts. The line-up is the same except for the new bassists. That’s amazing, because especially with so long periods of time between albums, it’s not unusual for a band to regroup and redefine itself. Musical models can be found in names such as Genesis, Marillion, IQ, Pendragon, Arena etc.
The band is especially convincing in the instrumental sector. Keyboarder Stefano Bigarelli has some illustrious sounds in his luggage and harmonizes well with the guitarist Massimo Basaglia, who also has a wide range of tones and orientates himself to Rothery, Hackett or even Barrett. As an old NeoProg fox I still like this style. However, vocals are more difficult to get used to. Guido Cavalleri’s voice has something very special about it. It took me a few listening passages to get acquainted with it. But at the end of the day, I have to admit to myself that I am glad that this is not the umpteenth variant of a Mad Hatter.
Conclusion: In the area of songwriting and arrangements Marygold have visibly evolved. I really like the instrumental contributions. Especially a song like Spherax H20 offers just about everything the NeoProgger wants to hear. Whether or not you like the voice is a matter of taste and everyone has to decide for himself. I’ve reviewed countless CDs and heard a lot worse. And Cavalleri is at least sound confident. So thumbs up.
