One Light Year – A review by ProgCritique

The first review of out new album ‘One Light Year’.

Let’s take a look to Gabriel Badelier‘s words on ProgCritique.

In the great tradition of Italian progressive rock, I was thrilled from the first listening of “One Light Year” by the band Marygold, which I didn’t know. The album contains seven songs, not one of which goes below 5 minutes, so how can we describe their music if not as the crossroads of P. F. M. (Premiata Forneria Marconi) of the seventies and Unitopia of the 2000s. Their melodies are lost in the torment of a fine and refined but still intense progressive rock. The foggy layers of Stefano Bigarelli’s keyboards trace the musical framework of all the compositions, the whole overflowing with Guido Cavalleri’s singings, associated with a cavernous voice, swaddled with cotton wool.

From the outset, I would advise you to begin your listening with the splendid “Spherax H2O”, the long epic and symphonic fresco of 12:29, which will take you back in time to the listeners and one will recognize at the detours of the musical phases the strong winkings that will fill all the amateurs of Genesis, Camel and other great bands representing the progressive genre. To note the excellent performance of guitarist Massimo Basaglia who gives us without measure of soli without burrs and sharp riffs. Not bad either this “Travel Notes on Bretagne” with the accents of Procol Harum, the sound of the organ and the rocky song are not foreign to the resemblance. One falls under the spell of “Lord of Time” unexpected baroque melodic, a melting-pot genre between progressive rock in the E. L. P. style (Emerson, Lake & Palmer) and some reminiscences close to the classic hard rock of Judah Priest (Nosradamus). The whole led to the baton by the rhythm section composed of Marco Pasquetto (drums) and Marco Adami (bass).

I hope by this chronicle I have aroused the desire to make you discover Marygold and his second album, (the first “The Guns of Marygold” dates from 2005), where all the compositions are strong in emotion!
